It was six years ago that Taylor Swift released her Red album, and I had a chance to talk to her back then when she released the album on October 22, 2012, and I wondered what was her thought process going into making this album? Well for this album, Red, I'm 22 years old going into my fourth album, so making this record I really knew that I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. I wanted to make a record that was different from my last three, and that's pretty much what we end up with on Red. And I know one of the ways that Taylor Swift changed things up when she was making Red was that she worked with other people. She wrote her entire Speak Now album by herself, but for Red, she brought in some interesting people from all walks of music, and so I wondered for Taylor, who did she turn to first when she decided she wanted to work with other people? The first person that I turned to to write songs and work on production was, I went in the studio with Max Martin and Shellback, and these are two guys who have such amazing melody sense, and they're writers I have wanted to work with for a really long time. I've always admired what they do. So going in the studio with them, I had, of course, all these ideas that I had brought in because I didn't want to show up unprepared. And so we just got to work, and we wrote fast, and we wrote a lot of songs, and we wrote songs that I was so excited about because they're so different from the way that they would have gone if I hadn't called up Max and said, hey, let's work together. I know one of the three songs that Taylor created with Max and Shellback was the first single that she released off Red. It's We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, as we celebrate the six-year anniversary of Red here on Big Machine Radio.
