Can't Live Without You is like Tidal Wave Part 2, if you're familiar with a record of mine called Ocean Eyes. The last song on that album is kind of about my inadequacies and natural flaws as a human and how the only thing that I can find true fulfillment in is God. So this song taps into that same idea that life is hard and it can be brutal at times, but I always find my strength in God. I really like the contrast you get when you marry this upbeat, EDM-influenced dance track with lyrics that are kind of the opposite, like lyrics in this particular song that have nothing to do with dancing or having fun or the typical nightlife, you know, party-life sensibility. They're just really honest and they're vulnerable, at least that's my hope. And yeah, the aesthetic of those two elements put together is something that I really like because they're almost at odds with each other, but they create this cool contrast, this cool dynamic. A few albums back, I wrote a song called The Yacht Club, and that song had a few similarities, being that parts of the track had EDM influences, yet the lyrics were really personal and intimate in a way. That kind of stuff I love. I feel like this was a song that I needed to write for a long time now, not as much for the listeners really, but for myself. Now that I've had a chance to stand back and look at it in the cold light of day, having had a bit of distance from it now since I finished the record, I really love how it turned out. It's definitely safe to say that I have a tougher time writing lyrics than I do writing melodies. So for me, I write all my melodies first, before I start thinking about lyrics or lyrical content. And sometimes having those melodies laid out first, it creates this really elaborate mold that you then have to fill exactly to the top with the right lyrics, and then you have to be concerned 100% with where syllables fall and how the cadence fits with the music, and sometimes that can feel really limiting. When you have all these things that you want to say on your heart, and you have to fit a paragraph worth of feeling and emotion into one line in a stanza, sometimes that feels constricting. In Can't Live Without You, though, I felt like everything fell exactly where it was supposed to fall. I felt like I didn't have to rework and rework the lines, the lyrics. They're simple, but it just felt effortless.
