Let me play this one, Carlos, and you do the picking on that one, because I'm a big fan of Alan Bergman and Marilyn that wrote The Way We Were, great songwriters, just super songwriters.
Of course, Miss Barbara didn't do too bad a job on singing it, and neither did Gladys Knight and the Pips. Gladys followed us into Las Vegas the last time we was down there. She got one of her pips caught in the elevator.
Jimmy Webb's not too bad a songwriter either. I like a lot of his work, such as this song.
By the time I get to Phoenix, she'll be rising. She'll find the note I left hanging on her door.
She'll laugh when she reads the part that says, I'm leaving, because I've left that girl so many times before.
By the time I make Oklahoma.
She'll be sleeping.
She'll turn softly and call my name out loud.
She'll cry just to think I'd really leave her.
Though time and time I've tried to tell her so.
She just didn't know I would really go.
If you see your brother standing.
Standing by the road with a heavy load from all the seeds he sowed.
And if you see your sister falling by the way, why don't you stop and say, friend, you're going the wrong way.
You've got to try a little kindness.
Just a little kindness.
Why don't you shine your light on her.
A little light for everyone to see.
And if you try a little kindness.
Then you overlook the blindness of the narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded street.
I am a lineman for the county.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
I drive the main road.
I'm just searching in the sun for another home below.
I hear you singing in the wild.
I can hear you through the wild.
I can hear you through the wild.
I can hear you through the wild.
I feel the concepts
Oh land man
Oh land man
Is still on the line
Oh land man
Oh land man
Is still on the line
I know I need a small vacation
But it doesn't look like rain
But it doesn't look like rain
Let's stretch down south on that road
Stand in the stream
And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time
And the way to call I'm on
Is still on the line
And honey, come back, I just can't stand
These lonely days a little bit longer
And the last time I held you
Seems like a hundred years ago
Back to his arms and never know
The joy of love that used to taste like honey
Come back where you belong to only me
It's knowing that your door is always open
And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bag
Roll up and stash behind your couch
And it's knowing I'm not shackled
By forgotten words and bonds
And ink stains that have dried up on summer lines
That keeps you on the back roads
By the river, by the river, by the river, by the river
By the rivers of my memory
It keeps you ever gentle on my mind
It's not clinging to rocks and ivy
Planted on their columns now that bind me
Or something that somebody said
Because they thought we'd fit together walking
It's just knowing that the world
Will not be cursing or forgiving
When I walk along the road
On the railroad track and find
That you're waiting on the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
Ever smiling, ever gentle on my mind
On my mind
Oh baby I see you
