Working My Way Down is a hot song.
And when we first wrote it, I was convinced there was no way I could ever sing it because
I didn't think I could sell it.
It's a sales pitch that you have to be tall, I think, to sell this song.
And that's a man who's 5'8 saying that.
But I wrote this song for and with Brett Eldridge.
So he's the co-writer on this, along with my brother, Brandon, who at the time was in
Train.
So there was a real chance that this song, if you squinted your eyes the right way, Pat
would sing Monaghan and Train because they were out.
They hadn't quite gotten to Soul Sister yet, but that's where they were close.
And Brett wasn't Mr. Christmas yet.
He was early on.
But man, there wasn't a girl in town who wouldn't faint if he just was like, hey, like
he didn't even have to get past one syllable.
And I thought, well, here's my chance to write a sexy song.
And someone else can kill it.
And then I can just sort of, you know, get my Boy Scout badge of hot song, put it on
my shirt, never have to tell anybody that that was me.
Well, as it turns out, Brett Eldridge didn't record the song and it sat around.
And I found it during this kind of strange pulling together of songs in the key of summer
in my mind.
And I think I had gotten to the title of the album before I picked this song.
And I went back and listened.
I listened to it and I was like, oh, this is really good.
And a good 15 years had passed since I'd written the song.
I thought, you know what?
There are a lot of things that I wouldn't have done in my 30s that I now do in my 40s.
Like I dance now, which I would have never danced in my 30s, but I will terribly dance
around the room.
I don't care anymore.
And then I thought, well, what if I just sort of took a stab at this?
You know, what's it going to sound like?
Well, as you can tell, well, you're about to tell it sounds like, you know, me singing
some pretty sexy song.
Except in the happiest way possible.
