The most fun part of the whole Christmas party was the party at Aunt Jenny's. Aunt Jenny lives in a farm that is far away on the other side of Storbyn. All of us in Bullebyn were invited to her a Sunday after Christmas. We had to go sledding for many, many hours to get there. Mom woke us up so early and put on a lot of shirts and necklaces. I was sure that I would vomit before I got to the party and yet Mom came with an extra scarf and wanted to wrap her head around me. Then I said that if it was meant that I would come to Aunt Jenny's as a spectacle then I would not want to come along. We went in our sled. Dad sat on the sledge and drove. He had large sleds on his feet so as not to freeze. Our sled went first, behind us came Sörgårdsleden and last came Norgårdsleden. Oh, how beautiful it sounded with all the bells. We were so happy that we sang but Mom said that we had to stop because otherwise we would get too much cold air. But we shouted a whole lot of things to Olle who came in the sled after us and he shouted on to Britta and Anna. If we get herring salad, I'll take it home, shouted Lasse. I'll do that too, shouted Olle. Then he had to explain to Britta and Anna what he meant by that and after a while Olle shouted to us that Britta and Anna were also going to get home if we got herring salad. But we did not get home even though we got herring salad because we got a thousand other kinds of food too so we did not have to take the herring salad. Aunt Jenny has three girls herself and there were a whole lot of other children at the party. We stayed in a large hall in the second floor and played all day except when we had to eat. Finally we got really tired of all that food because as soon as we had started playing, Aunt Jenny came and said that now we have to go down and eat more. Adults must not do anything other than eat when they are away at the party. When the adults had finally finished eating, they came up to us and played too. We played hide-and-seek. Olle's dad was the hide-and-seeker. He had a big window in his underpants for his eyes. We ran and grabbed him by the skirt as often as we could. Then we played hide-and-seek. I left my little golden heart in my underpants. When I wanted to take off my underpants, I was judged to hit three marbles. I did that and then I got my golden heart back. Olle was judged to shout his girlfriend's name into the oven. Then he shouted Lisa. Lasse started laughing and I was so embarrassed but then Olle looked so confused and said to me I mean my mom, do you understand? Her name is also Lisa. Dad was judged to jump ropes around the whole hall. Oh, we laughed at him. I have never seen dad jump ropes before. But the worst thing was what Aunt Jenny was going to do. She was judged to step up on the table and stand on one leg and look like a fool. But she did not want to. She stammered. Does not the table hold me, old fat person? And maybe she was right because Aunt Jenny weighs almost 100 kilos. The best thing about the party at Aunt Jenny's was that we would stay there overnight. I like to sleep away from strangers. Everything feels so unusual and strange. It smells very different from home. We were 14 children at the party and we were all going to sleep in the siblings' bed on the floor in that playroom. Imagine how fun it was to sleep on the floor. We had half mattresses but no sheets but only blankets. When we had laid down, all the adults came in to look at us. Here lie the young Swedes meter after meter, said dad. When we became lonely it was meant that we would sleep But it is probably almost impossible to get 14 young people to be quiet. Nanna told us about a big treasure that a knight long, long ago had dug down very close. Lasse wanted to go out and dig for it in the middle of the night. But Nanna said that no one could find it because it was a enchanted treasure. And then I fell asleep. We did not get home until late in the afternoon the next day. Before we got to Bullebyn it had become completely dark. We did not shout at each other on the way home because we were so tired. I lay back in the sled and looked up at all the stars. There were so many, so many and they were so far away. And then I crawled even further into the sled and sang quietly to myself so that Lasse and Bosse would not hear it. Twinkle, little star there, how I wonder where you are. I hope we get to meet again at the Christmas party next year as well.
