Ha Noi Police yesterday said DNA tests had revealed that a body found floating in the (Red) River on July 18 was that of a woman who died during botched breast-enhancement surgery last October.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Senior Lieutenant- Colonel Vo Hong Phuong said bone, skin and hair samples were related to the parents of the dead woman, Le Thi Thanh Huyen.
Phuong said that as the body had been in the water for so long, investigators could only use gene samples for identification.
Huyen, 39, is alleged to have died at unlicensed Cat Tuong beauty clinic run by Dr Nguyen Manh Tuong.
Tuong is said to have then dumped Huyen's body in the Red River with the help of the clinic's security guard.
A police officer from Gia Lam District Police Department said the body was found by residents near Van Duc ferry port in Gia Lam District, about three kilometres away from Thanh Tri Bridge, where the doctor admitted to dump the body.
At a court hearing in Ha Noi in April, Dr Tuong and the clinic's security guard, Dao Quang Khanh, admitted under questioning that they had disposed of the woman's body in the river.
However, the court returned them to jail while police continued to look for the body.
The court was told that Huyen went to the clinic on October 19 for abdominal liposuction and breast enlargement surgery.
After undergoing surgery performed by Dr Tuong, she allegedly developed breathing difficulties and started foaming at the mouth.
Tuong gave her an injection and Huyen appeared to recover, but later she is said to have turned blue and her blood pressure dropped so low that it could not be measured.
The doctor is then said to have tried to save her life by putting her on a ventilator and giving her cardiotonic drugs, but she failed to revive.
Then Tuong, together with the security guard allegedly put Huyen's body in a car and dumped it in the Red River.
They were arrested three days later.
Police and the victim's family have been searching for the body since the incident
