The way my first record came together was really kind of patched and random and we had a few songs from these demo sessions we did before they even decided to sign me to the label. It was Don't Know Why and Turn Me On are from those demo sessions and totally random. Then I went in to the studio with a great producer named Craig Street who had produced a record that I always loved by Cassandra Wilson called New Moon Daughter and she was on the label as well and I really liked the way she balanced. You know she came from a very heavy jazz singer background but she was doing all these different covers and she wrote really well and there was a lot of acoustic guitars and it was kind of her own thing and I loved it and I wanted to find my own thing and not be limited to just singing standards and I really liked the producer so I went in with Craig Street and we ended up using three songs from those sessions with Craig and the sessions were a little bit different from the rest of the record a lot darker and more guitars. It was really fun. Bill Frizzell came and played and Brian Blade on the drums. One of those songs was Seven Years and that's a song that Lee wrote. It's actually a really sweet story that I've never told anybody. I have this video of me when I'm like seven years old dancing to Chopin and it's hilarious because I'm the biggest klutz in the world. My mom showed it to him one day and I think he wrote that song after. Yeah and I love the way that song came out and the guitarist this great guitarist named Kevin Bright played on those sessions and he's just such a beautiful guitar player.
